Abstract
The ferns family Athyriaceae has a cosmopolitan distribution with ca.
650 taxa. Current classification based on molecular data characterized members
of Athyriaceae into three main genera which are Athyrium, Deparia, and Diplazium.
However, the classification of this family is still unstable due to incomplete
molecular data of the species in the family. This study was conducted to study
the phylogeny relationships of Athyriaceae species in
Peninsular Malaysia based on combination of anatomical and molecular data. In anatomical approach, characters
such as stele shape and type of venations have been observed meanwhile for molecular
study, sequences data were based on chloroplast regions (rbcL, atpB, atpA, trnL-F) and nuclear ITS (nITS).
Overall, the topology produced based on DNA sequences proved Athyriaceae is a
monophyletic family and supported well with high bootstrap value 100%. In
general, the trees produced formed two main clades in which clade I: consists
of all Diplazium species meanwhile
clade II comprises of Athyrium-Cornopteris and formed sister group with Deparia.
